Self Esteem Q & A

What is self-esteem?

Self-esteem, sometimes referred to as self-respect or self-worth, is the degree to which you value yourself. Your self-esteem can fluctuate throughout your life and is influenced by your experiences and other internal and external factors.

Low self-esteem is linked to a variety of personal issues and mental health disorders. For example, low self-esteem may prevent you from participating in activities or making new friends. It’s also linked with self-destructive behaviors, substance abuse, eating disorders. Your risk of developing mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety are also higher if you have low self-esteem.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?

The primary sign of low self-esteem is having a poor opinion of yourself. You might compare yourself to others and feel that you come up short. You might be overly critical over yourself and suffer from intrusive negative thoughts such as:

  • There’s nothing likable about you
  • You never do enough to succeed
  • You don’t deserve happiness or pleasure
  • No one is interested in you
  • It’s your fault that no one wants to be around you

These negative thoughts contribute to your low self-esteem and can lead to anxiety, depression, and other mental health problems.

You may try to cope with your low self-esteem by believing that you are helpless to change your circumstances. You might also rebel and mask your sense of inferiority with anger or an inflated disregard for what others might think of you.

Another common method of dealing with low self-esteem is using fake confidence to cover your insecurities. This creates an issue known as imposter syndrome where you fear that you’ll be caught out as less than perfect.
